- I am 57 years old. I have three children. My middle son Patrick had a friend who drowned when he was 16 years old.He was African-American. I began to become alarmed when I learned about the drowning statistics of Non-Caucasian youths compared to Caucasian. I thought I should try to do something to increase access to swim programs/lessons in my community for minorities. I am currently in graduate school. I am trying to learn more about setting up a grassroots organization that can fulfill this need so I want to research organization and people that have done that. I have applied for a grant to get a swim program going for 2nd grade students attending a local elementary school. This will be a 3-year pilot program. I want to learn as much as I can about successful programs that have been established already. I welcome any information. Please e-mail if you can help me..

Welcome to the site and so happy to have you aboard. Don't be shy and include your picture. Your profile was very interesting and uplifting. I pray you succeed in grad school, but particularly that God grants favor upon you in your quest to increase access to swim programs. Please, if you don't mind, share your success with those of us who are trying to accomplish the same goal. I also would like to encourage you to communicate with DAP Members, who are very knowledgable, resourceful, and inspiring to help you. Take as many swimming courses as time will allow.
